On Mubi you can watch the great Georgian-French drama film დასაწყისი (Beginning) by Déa Kulumbegashvili that was released in 2020 and is her first feature film. It follows Yana, the wife of a Jehova’s Witnesses community leader, who struggles with her life and emotional world in the aftermath of an attack by extremists.
It is a slow film with beautiful shots and long takes. The actors are well cast and act natural and calm. The style of the film brings Michael Haneke to mind, it is a successor to the Romanian New Wave led by Cristi Puiu and Cristian Mungiu and also references Tarkovsky’s work. The music is composed by Chilean-American electronic music artist Nicolas Jaar and the film was executive produced by Mexican director Carlos Reygadas.
A deep cinematic experience.
(After the film on Mubi there is a great Q&A with director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, 2017) and Déa Kulumbegashvili about her work on Beginning.)
