The Taiwanese film “Yi Yi” by Edward Yang from the year 2000 is a masterfully crafted, calm reflection on the aspects of human life.
Using the example of a family of three generations, the drama shows how everyone, old or young, faces their own personal problems and challenges. While the film begins with a wedding, it ends with a funeral and in between every stage of life is addressed from birth to death, switching between the characters of the family and connecting them all. A poetic film about life, calm and thoughtful.
At Cannes, Edward Yang won the Palme d’Or for best director, and his film has been one of the best films of the 21st century for many critics.
