The French film Irma Vep by Olivier Assayas (Carlos TV Mini-Series, 2010) from 1996 is an interesting and weird experience about Hong-Kong movie star Maggie Cheung (In the Mood for Love, 2000) playing herself, who is cast by an elderly director who envisions to remake a classic French silent film called “Les Vampires” with her in the erotic leading role.
By showing the chaotic creative production process surrounding the shooting of the movie the film comments on the state of modern French Cinema and has a compelling somewhat hypnotic aura that pulls the viewer into its weird world.
