Prime Video is finally showing Asif Kapadia’s great British documentary “Diego Maradona” from 2019.
The film tells the story of the Argentine football star with a focus on his time in Naples from 1984 to 1991. From the rise to the football god to his dramatic fall. In the 1980s, Maradona’s agent Jorge Cyterszpiler had commissioned two cameramen to document Maradona’s life for a film project, resulting in hundreds of hours of footage. But the planned film was not produced. In addition, further recordings that rested for more than 30 years in the house of Maradona’s ex-wife were discovered and now used for the first time in a film.
Director Kapadia, who already skilfully told the tragic story of Amy Winehouse with archival material with his documentary “Amy” (2015), creates an incredibly strong journey through this turbulent time in Maradona’s life and brings the viewer very close. It’s not just for fans and casual dribblers.
