The 1950 US Western film The Gunfighter directed by Henry King is a great early example of the deconstruction of Wild West heroism. Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird) stars in the main role as infamous gunslinger Jimmy Ringo growing older and wishing to leave his lifestyle behind and just settle down and reunite with his old love and son to live in peace. A great tragic Western that already shows the self conscious themes that would become prevalent in the genre in the years to come.
