You Were Never Really Here – ★★★½

The stylish psychological thriller “You Were Never Really Here” by Lynne Ramsay from 2017 is now available on Netflix.

A short, exciting art-house film with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, who plays a mercenary traumatized by his time in the military, who is commissioned by a politician to free his daughter from a human trafficking ring.

A dark film, which deals with the suppressed psychological trauma of the main character with interesting narrative means and how he tries to get rid of his own mental suffering with extreme violence.

The excellent and nerve-wracking soundtrack was composed by Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood, who already excelled in P.T. Anderson films like “There Will Be Blood” and “The Master”. The plot was compared to Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” and, in addition to the same leading actor, has a lot in common with 2019’s “Joker” film. The basic structure of the order and its execution are also reminiscent of IO Interactive’s Hitman series.

In Cannes in 2017, Lynne Ramsay won the award for the best screenplay and Phoenix’s role was honored with the award for the best actor.
Worth it!
